Warming up

North Cascades Highway

First order of business:  Happy birthday, Dave!  Hope you get a nice steak on the grill for dinner.

This photo came from the Washington DOT website. (I think they need a bigger flag.) There's so much snow in the mountains, clearing the North Cascades Highway will take longer than usual this spring.

The DOT is hopeful, but not positive, it will be opened by Memorial Day weekend, the start of summer tourist season in the Methow Valley.  It's a surreal experience driving between these walls of snow over Washington Pass early in the year.  Almost like careening down a bob sled run. Adding to the thrill, there are always bicyclists on the narrow, curving road. Yikes. We're going to Twisp later this month over hairy old Snoqualmie Pass instead.

It's raining now, but this will be the warmest day of the year. Parts of western Washington might actually hit 75.  I was outside yesterday afternoon planting pots and suddenly had this unfamiliar and pleasant sensation.  I was WARM in just a t-shirt. I hope to get in a long afternoon of garden work. It's a jungle out there.
