Garden sanctuary

On Friday, we went to a little-known garden in Federal Way called Powellswood. We've been members for a few years now, and it finally opened again last week.

It's hard to imagine, but in 1993, this property was the site of a hideous old garbage dump, with soil so sterile weeds wouldn't even grow.  The new owners partnered with the county on a research project testing the effectiveness of different mulch preparation on soil restoration.  Needless to say, it worked. Nothing like growing plants on heaps of compost.

Powellswood is never really crowded, but when we got there at opening time, we were surprised to have the place entirely to ourselves.  We walked the loop trail and listened to the birds-- truly a balm for the weary mind and spirit.

Time for a haircut...
