All Saints Day

Italy 1929

Today is All Saints Day. The date was chosen by the early church in an effort to deflect attention from the pagan holiday of All Hallows Eve. It didn't work.

Oh, gosh, the holidays seem to blend into one now. I remember when we didn't think about Christmas until after Thanksgiving, when the Sears wish book showed up in the mail. The first one was published in 1933 and the last in 1993. We spent hours looking drooling over it until it was dog-eared and scribbled up.

Ready or not, here comes November and the typical weather to go with it. It's nice to get away but just as nice to be home (the other one, that is) as we're headed into a long wet and cold stretch with snow in the mountains.

No complaints about the drive yesterday since the only low light was a soggy chicken sandwich at an overwhelmed, dirty McDonald's in Cle Elum, the last pit stop before home. The dining and restroom options being few and far between.
