Ohio to the rescue

I haven't done a Bertha update on the blog for quite a while.  The good news is she's been quietly toiling away and has completed 90 percent of the 9,270-foot dig from downtown to South Lake Union.

But Bertha was in the news again this week when workers discovered she was off course by a few inches.  That doesn't sound like much, but breaking through that final ring into daylight requires an exact fit.

WSDOT says "an extremely precise gyroscope from Ohio" is coming to help locate Bertha's path and make sure they can get her back on track for the last 1,000 feet.  They didn't provide any other details on this Midwestern instrument.

Our fancy four-lane, heavily tolled tunnel is still expected to open to traffic by early 2019.
