All Saint's Day

All Saints icon
Halloween night is the eve of All Saint's Day.  There are thousands of canonized and patron saints, and November 1st is the day to honor them all like a big church Veteran's Day celebration.

There are saints who act as guardians for every area of life.  For example, St. Joseph of Cupertino never worked for Apple or flew on an airplane, but he's the patron saint of air travel. This is because the mere mention of God caused him to float through the air in rapture.

Goodness. But sadly, there is no canonized saint who is the patron of shopping, or I would have thanked him for the great bargain yesterday at Safeway: individual snack packs of pistachios with a sticker marked down from $6.99 to just a buck a bag.

After dinner, the rain finally paused and the wind blew the clouds around in a perfectly spooky way.  The knocking went on for a couple of hours, with me jumping up and down to hand out goodies to a stream of trick-or-treaters.  I guess mini candy bars are pretty ho-hum, because the treat that caused the most excitement on the doorstep was 5 salty nuts in a tiny package.  About 8 o'clock, when the spooks at the door started to look bigger than me, we finally tuned the porch light off.

But there are plenty of pistachios left for a little girl named Nova who loves them.
