National Roof Over Your Head Day
December 3rd is National Roof Over Your Head Day. Just a day to appreciate the simple comfort of the roof over your head and be thankful for a warm house. It's going to be colder in Seattle this week than it has been in two years. Last winter was pretty wimpy-- no snowstorms or temperatures below freezing.
There won't be any gloating next spring about geraniums and begonias having wintered over. I threw a blanket over the olive tree in the stairwell, but that's it. It will be down in th 20's at night this week, with clear sunny days and a wind straight down from the Arctic.
A flock of black-capped chickadees suddenly appeared in the yard, and I felt sorry for them and set up the sunflower feeder again. They found it in about 15 seconds.
OK, nothing is more tedious than people who brag about their phone apps, but with these unusual clear night skies I want to mention Sky Guide. Frankly, most free apps aren't worth the space they use on your phone, but occasionally you run across something so technologically brilliant, so marvelous it is truly mind-boggling. With Sky Guide you can point your phone to the sky to automatically identify stars, constellations, planets, satellites. It works any place, any time of day.
On the way to my car yesterday morning in the pitch dark, and just wondering about that bright "star" in the western sky? Jupiter! What a wonderful world.
