Things to do on the 4th of July

Watch fireworks...

Head to the beach with 300,000 others...

See a military parade...

Strut your stuff with a friend...

Have a romantic picnic...

Show off on the water...

And give firecrackers to a baby...
(Just kidding!)

It feels strange being home for the 4th this year, since we spent the last three over in eastern Washington.  Small town Twisp is a lot more fun than Seattle on this holiday, and we'll  miss seeing the little main street parade along with Amanda and Tom's parade of nice friends dropping by the house.  A mid-week day off is nice, but hard to plan an overnight trip around, plus we're still catching our breath from our Ohio vacation.   But next year we'll be watching the parade from the porch with (almost) 4 year old Nova and her (almost) 9 month old brother or sister.  Seems hard to believe.

It is fairly quiet in Seattle-- fireworks were banned long ago although I suppose it will get noisier as the evening goes on with pyrotechnics "imported" from the outlying Indian reservations.  Once upon a time, there was a fireworks stand a few blocks away from the house, and the banging never stopped from the moment it opened until it shut down.  Our pets were terrorized. In those days we had quite a show right from the front porch, and by 11 pm the streets looked like a war zone filled with smoke and trash.   We were younger then and it was great fun, but so much for the good old days.  Tonight we'll be trying to get some sleep so John can jump up as usual when the 4:40 alarm goes off tomorrow morning.
