Before and after

These are photographs of the doomed viaduct and current seawall construction along the Seattle waterfront.  The locals avoid the waterfront like the plague, but intrepid tourists and ferry riders are greeted with a roaring wind tunnel of traffic and construction noise.

Artist imaginings of the "new waterfront" are making the rounds in the Seattle press this week. The project is over 10 years in planning and has a price tag of $700 million, which seems pretty low by Seattle standards.

The mess is transformed into a pedestrian promenade of parks, plazas, native landscaping and views of the Olympic Mountains across Puget Sound.  And the sun finally comes out by then.
