Nature Seattle

"Jeb"
If you've been to visit then you know we live in a big city.  The houses in West Seattle sit on a postage stamp lots; our stamp happens to be a little larger than average because we're on a corner.  We do have a beautiful flower garden to enjoy in the summer, but when I'm out in the yard (unless I crawl under the hedge) there isn't a spot where I don't have a view other people's houses, roofs or power lines.

This is an old part of Seattle, and the architecture is an eclectic mix. Our bungalow was built at the beginning of the last century with lavish use of old growth timber, but the big house across the street is new construction heavy on composite wood and plastics. Still, we love our green yards and like to fence them in for privacy. There's an amazing amount of nature within this densely populated square mile or so.  Dozens of raccoons, countless fat squirrels, thousands of birds of different species, bee hives, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, compost piles, chicken coops, and so on.

And oh yes-- a miniature horse named "Jeb" lives nearby.  His people take him on walks around the neighborhood sometimes, and yesterday morning when I was scraping ice off the car I saw them across the street.  I'm used to horses, but it's always a double-take to see a pony grazing along the parking strip.  I wasn't quick enough to take a good picture, but you can read  about "Jeb" on the West Seattle blog.
