September

Book of Hours
September calendar page

September is such a beautiful and evocative month. What comes to mind when you think of September?  New apples, football, back-to-school, the first changing leaves, fall rains, the last of the summer flowers.  And oh yes-- home canning.  John is starting to drop hints about his dwindling supply of chutney down in the basement store room.  He keeps track of such things. Our favorites are: tomato-pear chutney and a blend of spiced peaches and plums we call "Washington" chutney.  Homemade curry isn't the same without it, so I'd better get going.  Actually I can make the tomato-pear any time of year, but who wants to get the canning kettle out in December?

Nova and I had fun at the sunshiney park yesterday while Amanda went out with a friend for a few hours.  She's doing well with the usual late pregnancy complaints, and only a few short weeks until the little one arrives.  Everyone asks if it will be a boy or a girl, since it's the common thing to know in advance these days. Amanda and Tom don't know, wanting to save that special surprise for the birth.  Plenty of time to buy pink or blue clothes later for a healthy and happy baby.  All I can say is we would be absolutely delighted with another little girl, or the different adventure of having a boy in the family.
