October

Then summer fades and passes and October comes.
We'll smell smoke then, and feel an unexpected sharpness,
a thrill of nervousness, swift elation,

a sense of sadness and departure.

Thomas Wolfe

The Book of Hours calendar page for October shows a country scene near the immense Louvre castle on the bank of the Seine River. That little archer figure in the center is a scarecrow, and peasants are tilling and sowing winter crops. The poor horse looks like he's about to get whacked on the head.

The Louvre began as a royal residence back in the 1100's, and if you visit the museum today you can see a remnant of the original building in the crypt, artistically lighted.

Last week we could pretend it was still summer. I was at the barn Thursday, and the horses were swishing flies in the hot sun. Owners were annoyed because blankets put on the day before had to be pulled off their sweltering horses at noon. But nights are chilly.

Cold rain is on the way for the next week. In Seattle, we've probably had the last 70 degree day for-- the next 7 months or so? Lovely September was over in the blink of an eye. It was the shortest summer we can remember.
