The week wraps up

There were about 30 players yesterday on the patio outside the C&P Coffee Company. A sunny but chilly day. I got smart and brought a chair pad so I wouldn't have to sit on freezing metal for 2 hours. Also, scored a prime spot near one of the heaters. The early bird, and all that.

All the music is on our iPads now so no one hauls around binders or sheets of paper. I'm envious because most people have special music stands just to hold their device. This switch to electronics has worked pretty well, considering the different levels of technical ability in the group.

There's lots of air-drop sharing, since you can find just about any music "transcribed" with ukulele chords. Between you and me, some of those classic old rock masterpieces sound like a train wreck. The Beatles? Neil Diamond? The Eagles? Ukulele players love their songs, which might be our demographic. Who cares. What we lack in skill we make for in enthusiasm. We're even better with the hokey old simple songs and, of course, Hawaiian music.

There's a pretty high level of playing in this group, which lifts up the average players like me. The group is inclusive and non-judgemental, a nice characteristic of all good ukulele clubs.  The man in the right hand corner (Mike) is the group leader, and does a wonderful job starting the songs and giving us helpful tips and advice. So it's almost like having a free lesson, except much more fun. His lead partner, Uncle Rod, spends the winter in Hawaii, and when they're together it's quite the happy show.

Speaking of other music, the serious kind, we're going downtown for a concert today. A windy and wet day coming up. Yuck.

Have a good weekend.
