The Book of Hours- August
"Summer's lease hath all too short a date."
William Shakespeare
Our weather has been boring in a pleasant sort of way-- although still cooler than normal and the long term forecast shows more of the same for August. Seattle had only 78 minutes of summer last year, if you count the time when the temperature was above 80 degrees. So far this year we've had 50 minutes of summer, and have hit the 80 mark just 3 times.
The mornings are usually overcast with a heavy marine layer that burns off in late afternoon (or not) for a few hours of sun. It's very dry and the lawns in the neighborhood are turning brown, including ours. The pots have to be watered everyday and the flower beds every few days-- the biggest chore of the garden right now.
There is a beautiful quality to the soft, golden light in August. Early in the morning, when it is finally quiet, the air has soothing, almost enchanting quality. It won't be a quiet weekend in Seattle. The Blue Angels are in town for SeaFair and will be screaming over the city all week.
