Pink pickled eggs

These probably look pretty weird, unless you're from a place like eastern Pennsylvania, where they pickle and preserve everything, from meat and fish to vegetables and eggs. It was typical to see a big jar of these sitting on a counter as bar snacks. In retrospect, an unappetizing sight at room temperature.

There is an old saying that Pennsylvania Dutch meals should have “seven sweets and seven sours." In other words, eat some cake—but eat some pickles, too.

Another custom I remember from childhood was all the food  being set out on the table and passed around at once, especially for casual supper. (The big cooked dinner was always mid-day.) In the evening, we helped ourselves to fried potatoes, cold cuts, bread, pickles, leftover pie and cake-- everything together on the same plate. The food was simple but delicious.

If you're inclined to try these Barbie eggs, the simple hack is just using the juice from an empty jar of pickled beets. My mother would never throw out such a useful thing, so she made these occasionally. We loved them. They are a tasty snack and pretty on salads.

It's Sea Fair weekend in Seattle, basically the last big summer festival. Summer isn't over, but the season always has a winding down feeling after that, with football starting and school around the corner.

A sudden change in the forecast this morning, as monsoon rain clouds drift up from the southwest, bringing rain to eastern Washington. Some showers might push across the Cascade Mountains and reach us.

An unusual weather pattern, because our famous Seattle rain typically comes in from the Pacific. But any moisture will be welcome in western Washington.

Ho-hum

Another beautiful summer morning here in Seattle. Quiet at the moment, but all week, huge double trucks have been going by the house, delivering mountains of gravel to the track. This after pulling out mountains of dirt that coated everything with a layer of dust, especially down the hill. Who knew artificial turf construction was such a massive project?

It's also Sea Fair Week, which means the Blue Angels are in town practicing. I'd love to see their Sunday show from Lake Washington, but the traffic is pretty daunting. You can always watch on local TV while listening to them roar around in the sky above. Actually kind of fun getting the views from the cockpit.

Meanwhile, out in the peaceful countryside, Nova and "Ginger." She gets to ride her in exchange for doing some chores. What a deal.

Parched

The neighbor's honey bees flock to this bird bath the minute I fill it. They must be able to smell water. All the birds and little creatures are thirsty, poor things.

What a parched summer, with no measurable rain in Seattle for many weeks. We are way below normal for the year.  I've never seen the the yard so dry, but I might have said that last year as well.  There's no doubt our summers are more arid, I just have to look at old garden pictures.

These lush lilies were grown back in 2009. You could always count on at least a few good rains during the summer. Hand watering just isn't the same as a natural soaking and rain also contains nitrates, an essential fertilizer. Our flowers, other than hydrangeas, are pretty much over.

On the bright side, with a dose of Mater Magic, great climate for growing tomatoes in containers along the hot side of the house.

That's about all the news. I haven't volunteered at the Cafe for several weeks, but going back today to see what's been happening in senior land.

August

Fairest of months!
Ripe summer's queen
The hey-day of the year
With robes than gleam with sunny sheen
Sweet August does appear.

Once a year

Chili rellenos from scratch is a most labor intensive dish. Most of these are peppers from our single potted plant nursed along for months, so I always do something special with them.

The first step is charring, which requires patient turning over the hot grill. Here's a pepper hack: if you buy them at the store, pick out flat, straight ones, which makes this step much easier.

Steam under a dish cloth for a few minutes...

And the tough peel (more or less) slips right off. Make a small slit and remove the seeds. Don't wig out if they tear apart a bit. The thick batter holds the cheese filling inside when they fry.

These are filled with pepper jack-- a healthy vegetarian recipe! ha ha.

Oh yes, don't forget to make a spicy red sauce.

On to the batter. Separate the eggs and whip the whites.

Fold in carefully so it stays nice and fluffy.

Now, here comes the messy part. Coat the peppers in flour before dipping in the goopy batter.

Fried in a generous amount of fresh sunflower seed oil, probably the most expensive ingredient in this recipe.

Perfection and worth every single calorie. And that's it for another year.

Swim team

A proud mom's collection of Maya and Nova's ribbons from this season. Both girls are superb swimmers but Maya really has the competitive bug. I think the goal is to beat her big sister, and she's getting close.

Their team, the Methow Valley "Killer Whales," dominated the regional meets this summer. They compete with Okanagan, Brewster and Omak. All of these towns, including Twisp, have outdoor seasonal pools, but Twisp is in dire need of a new one.

The Wagner Pool at the city park is 50 years old; it leaks, the boilers break down, etc. The Friends of the Pool volunteer group manage to keep it going on a wing and a prayer, but everyone worries about a permanent closure.

The pool is an essential part of community life in the summer.  When school is out, kids just don't have many recreational opportunities. Not to mention, surrounded by cold lakes and fast running rivers, an essential place for kids to learn to swim.

Everyone is in agreement that the Twisp pool needs to be replaced, but not how to pay for it. We don't vote in Twisp, but there's a measure on the ballot in November to create a special taxing district to support a new indoor aquatics center. This is a very ambitious plan. Pass or fail, I wish them luck. Just a spanking new outdoor pool would be terrific.

Well, July is wrapping up. Have you noticed it's already a touch darker in the morning?

Have a good weekend.
