Books

Books are the real savior during this long winter. Television, even with all our choices, gets old. Last night we streamed "Mank" on Netflix, a new black and white movie about the making of "Citizen Kane." It was nominated for several Golden Globe awards-- one of those Hollywood insider movies that put the rest of us to sleep. Or maybe I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate the artistic genius.

Many old movies are much more entertaining.  We watched "Klute" the other night. Wow, that one still packs a punch. An Oscar for Jane Fonda in 1971.

I'm reading a beautifully written novel now called "Rules of Civility" by Amor Towles. The setting is New York in 1937, with a wonderful depiction of the old city and social strata. A fascinating period, after the Great Depression and before WWII. Of course, in hindsight, most eras look glamorous compared to our socially crass times. Towles also wrote "A Gentleman in Russia" which I look forward to reading next.

The weekend weather looks cruddy. Not that it matters, we'll be watching the Super Bowl along with everyone else on Sunday.  Stay well, stay warm and hang in there.
