After months of below normal temperatures, tropical warmth moved in on Wednesday that came (literally) from the region of Hawaii. Some places got close to 80 degrees, followed by sudden, violent thunderstorms yesterday afternoon. There were over 2,000 lightening strikes around Puget Sound.
That kind of severe weather is rare for us. The Pacific Ocean moderates incoming storms and we don't have those dramatic differences in temperatures between the ground and the upper atmosphere like in the Midwest. We're back to plain old cool Northwest rain this morning.
Today is Cinco de Mayo, one of those "holidays" adopted by Americans like St. Patrick's Day and Oktoberfest. It commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It isn't widely celebrated in Mexico.
When beer advertisers decided to promote the holiday in the 1980s, the American celebration of Cinco de Mayo became widespread, mostly in regard to eating and drinking. The grocery ads are full of specials this week for Americanized Mexican food like packaged taco shells and canned sauces.
I took some leftover roast pork out of the freezer and I'm making "wet" burritos tonight, a hefty dinner we don't have very often (for obvious reasons.)
