The Special Collections Library at Duke University
holds one of the biggest collections of sheet music published in America between 1850 and 1920. The illustrations are really fun to look at, although by modern standards some of them can make you cringe. But historic sheet music is an important collection because it gives a unique look at ideas on culture, race, patriotism, love, and ideals of beauty. Here's a few examples.
