Vintage Fortune

The elegantly designed Fortune magazine was founded by Henry Luce in 1930 and launched in the first months of the Depression. Fortune was not just concerned with finance, and Luce recruited top graphics designers and journalists for quality content and presentation.  The magazine believed a thriving national culture was a sign of economic success.

Along those lines, I heard that Gore Vidal died this week at age 86. One of a last generation of great American writers, he told the truth as he saw it, even when those words were not welcome. In his last decades of life, he was convinced America was in a deep decline.

The amazing vintage Fortune covers are now highly collectible. The vivid graphics were created by the most talented artists of the day, including Diego Rivera, Fernand Leger and Ben Shahn.  The designs are creative and uncluttered; simplicity and composition tell the story.  Here's a few examples:
